I love carrots

Last lesson we were looking for information about Global Issues. I focused on Racism which i think is a global issue because many people in the world have fights about this. What is Racism, "Racism means attitudes, practices and other factors that disadvantage people
because of their race, color or ethnicity. Racism can be directed against any
race, color or ethnicity." There are less and less racist people in the world today but it is still a Global Issue. The class has been divided into two different groups and i am now in the group focusing on racism.

This lesson we split up into our groups. In my group which was racism, we had to form two statues based on fear and ignorance. We decided for ignorance, to have a 4 people on the floor asking for help to other 4 people standing up facing their backs to people on the floor.
For fear we decided to have 4 people on one side and 4 people on the other side but both groups facing each others. One of the groups would be scared of the other group while the other group would try to be all friendly.
Both fear and ignorance are related to racism in one way. Fear can also be disgust of other people who are different to us and that we don't know. When people are being ignorant they try not to see other people suffering and trying to get helped, they are too selfish and again as I said before scared of others.

Today we continued with our statues, but we also had to do a play. We split our group into two groups, A and B. Each group had to do a different play based on a statement or a picture depending on the group. I was in group A with Andrine, Flor and Shirin. I don't remember what the statement was but our play was about a girl wanting to enter a really good college but just because she was black she wasn’t accepted in the college. This shows that because of discrimination black people don't get into good schools, then don't get good jobs and then become poor.

Today we had to do another play with the whole group, based on a picture. We had five pictures and we could choose which on we wanted. We decided to take a picture of a women and 4 men in the street. The woman was wearing a burka while the men did not have to wear anything special. We had a play showing that men had sometimes more rights than women.

Today we continued with the same play that we had last time but we added a narrator seeing both sides of the Issue. The 2 sides of the Issue could be: I think that women have less rights the men, it is unfair and we need to do something about it or, I think that this is normal, it has always been this way and most of the women are not complaining about it. This is part of our tradition why should we change it!
We had to have a narrator first on one side and then on the other side. Our play could be the news, a documentary or anything else which has a narrator in it.

To respond to Mrs. Tickles question, I think that monologues might be useful to learn more about the history or problems or anything of a character during a play or be made to feel sympathy for a certain character.

Today we worked on our monologues. I have already finished my monologue and i started to practice saying it without any papers in front of me. My topic is poverty. I am 18, poor, i live in Ethiopia and I am a genius in school. My story is: When i was about 13, my parents had big problems with money but my mum did everything so i could be in a good school. She though this was very important for my future because that was what ruined hers. My Dad steals money to by alcohol and was always hanging around or playing poker with his friends. My parents then divorced because my mum said my dad was wasting all the money.
I was really good in school and my teachers were very proud of me. My mum now didn't have any more time for me and i had to find time between school and my homework at home to help my mum find money. A few years my mum married someone else and my big exams for university were coming up. My step dad beat me and my mum. I still did really good in the exams and my teacher said he will pay for me to go to a really good university in England. I am now 18 and don't know what to do; live my mum to live a good life in England or stay here to help her. My monologue ends asking the audience what i should do.

Our project:

We have started our new project and have already scripted scene 1,3,4,5,6. We all came up with great ideas but still have to try the scenes to change them around and make them better. We will need to put some more in about people's culture and try not to often anyone with this play.Because it is just a play.

To answer "Catch up with your reflection!"

1. This might have been frustrating because this play will be adressed to international students like us and these come from the US/UK/NZ or Autralia. There are many countries in the world and many cultures which means that they are many different names. This is supposed to be adresse d to international students like us but they have names coming from only one part of the world, the western world. By limiting themselves to one part of the world, it seems like they want to show the audience that they are better, they have the best names or anything like this. It might also annoy the audience.

2.What works best for me is imagine a script writ it down, try it and then add parts, change it around and make it better. That way we have something to start from and then we can improvise, add more come with really good ideas and all.

Response to "The end of term":

1. I think that we were really successful in our play being suitable to international students because none of our characters are from the same cultures. They all come from different part of the world and we don't have anything trying to show that one culture is better than the other.

2. If we would have been able to continue with this project i would have wanted to perform in front of the school with costumes and all. What would have been great too would have been to publish our script and maybe sell it in the school.

3.I liked using the Blogger because you could go and see what the others wrote from Ms. Tickle's questions.

4. This project has made me remember that people could actually think that their culture is better than others. And that people don't really realize that they are wrong like in our play. Our play finishes really well but i don't think that in the world people will ever be able to accept the truth.

5. I will always maintain interest in my Global Issue and maybe be more careful now not to offend anyone because we can sometimes hurt someone without even knowing.

6. We worked well in our group and had a lot of fun even thought some of us would not work sometimes. We had a lot of arguments and we wasted a huge part of our time arguing about a problem with someone's name which I thought was really not important. We managed to get all our scenes done but we had to do really fast and didn't have so much time so they are not as we wanted them to be. I think that if we would have had more time we could have done a great job, because we had many cool ideas to put in.

7. I think that for next year there should be a smaller project which students would actually be able to finish and present in front of the school. I think that the blog was a great way of doing journals instead of in a book. THANK YOU FOR THIS TERM OF DRAMA, IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!
