Trust

i think that the trust exersises that we did were really fun and they were also interesting, because for the one that one partner had to close their eyes while the other one communicated directios to them , i was partnered with Ryan. it was sort of hard to trust him at first, because i thought that he would think that it would be a good laugh to run me into the wall or something, but after a little bit, i had not yet hit anything, which helped me trust him a lot more than i did at the beginning!

Trust exercises

This is an ongoing theme as our class learns to work with each other in a mature and resposbile manner. Sometimes it can be hard to let go. Do you earn trust or give it?

Street Children and Drugs

I found that in Columbia, the most common type of drugs/addictive substance that street children there take is sniffing glue, and also the heavy consumption of alcohol. This is beacuse they are both very easy to get, and are both also very cheap. In both America and England, although glue sniffing is still popular with children that live on the streets, a new drug called called 'cheese' is becoming very popular.

What drugs do street children take?

http://www.counselling.cam.ac.uk/drugs.html
  1. This was the website that used to find out what drugs street children take. I found out that drugs are placed into categories. Stimulants are types of drugs that give a short, energetic effect. These are just recreational drugs. Drugs such as Ecstasy and Crack Cocaine are stimulants.
  2. Depressents are drugs that give a relaxing and sensational feeling, as well as reducing the intensity of pain and of emotions such as fear, anger or anxiety. Examples are Morphine.

M3A 2007-08 Entry 1

Welcome to your blog. Use this space to post comments on the work done so far. Please use these questions to help you structure your answers. Make sure you respond by clicking the link below to 'add a comment' rather than creating a new post. This is your holiday homework and must be posted by January 7th. Any problems, email your work to me tickle_jennifer@tisa.az and I'll post it for you.
Which issue did you find the most interesting to explore and why?
What will you find interesting about the issues we have chosen as a class?
Tell me two facts you have dioscovered about our issues and tell me where you got those facts from.
Tell me about a useful website for research- what is good about it?
What do you hope to achieve in this unit of study?
We have to create a play which is culturally transferrable - give me one way we might achieve this.
This trust exercise worked very well and I trusted my partner enormously because I knew her quite well except it was at some times very difficult because I could hear the people all around me and I got frightened that I would crash into them but I kept my eyes shut because of the instructions that were given to me. There was some times where we misunderstood each other because the signals were sometimes done to many times making us turn around several times and doubting each other a couple of times. Jenna and I trusted each other once the exercise was started but in the before the exercise stared Jenna had trouble trusting me because she of my usual behavior. I on the other had did not care as much as here if I would bump into another person or a table, but Jenna pulled through and it worked actually quite well.
The reason we did this exercise was because we needed to build trust in each other for future projects that we would do in drama. This exercise is very important because we basically put our eyes in theirs and trust them to guide us if we were blind.
We also did a trust exercise in which we put trusted 2 people to catch us when we fall which I thought worked quite well except the only difficulty was that it was quite hard to fall right on command. But we had to fall like a tree so it would be easier to fall and catch. I trusted the people in my group but they sometimes were caught off guard and they once didn’t catch me but they did try to but I slightly touched to floor.

The reason we did these trust exercises were because if we were ever to do such a thing a project we could trust the people to catch us.

My First Post

I really wanted to explore the topics about rape and drugs. I would like to do these because i think it is a big problem all around the world. It is also something that should be taken it more seriously. Our classes final choice was to include many global issues into our class project. We chose to do child abuse, street children, drugs and rape. I really like this idea because we are including alot of global issues that effect people all around the world. And we can also explore all of the topics and not just one of them. Which i think will make the project more interesting. I went onto the CNN website to research about Child Abuse. I found some really interesting Information on the site http://www.co.ba.md.us/Agencies/police/community/abuse.html. Two interesting facts that i found out was that 84% of prison inamtes were abused as children. Another fact that i found out was that one in three girls and one in five boys have been and are being sexualy abused by an adult, during their childhood. I found this site very usefull because it was easy to follow and the information was very useful.

Fazizi's posts updated

I would have found it frustrating also. That’s because they haven’t chose the country yet and they just started choosing the names. Why country? That’s because first you should know from where the family is from so you can come up with names. But they had the names which might have not even matched the names of that country. For example lets say Korea. If they family was Korean, I don think they would have named they kids as Dorothy, John or James. The family might have been Turkish and they don’t have such names. The names should be the same as the country would have. They should be careful with the names they choose.
For me the best for developing the plays works the script part. I think when you just start the play you don’t really make sense. For example in our group we just started, and people were laughing in parts where you should be angry or saying nice stuff in a sad part. I think it just works out better while writing it out first. When you write the script you get to think more and decided what you will say next, that way you don’t have to think of things you are going to say. I remember we started just saying the words out, and Samir and I have realized that it just doesn’t work. So we went to SRA and started working there. We as a group came up with the things of what each person must say and when. When we were practicing it helped us a lot. That’s because we already knew what we were doing and we weren’t all messed up. Everyone had their line to read and it said what we were meant to do.

My monologue.

I think monologues are pretty useful. For people who can not speak in front of audience, this is a chance for them to learn how to. I will give an example from mine. My monologue was going pretty well. When I started practicing I kept on laughing the whole time. I tried it like 4 times in front of my friends, and I got much better with all that. When I had to perform it I was not as nervous as I thought I would be. Also monologues help us to express ourselves. When we tell a story we can think of many things to say with all the emotions.

Kmans Stuff

In respons to the homework from february 9th (oops) i think that monoluoge can be very important in large plays. It gives them a quality similar to books. In books whe can see a characters thoughts and this gives us a much better understanding. If we see two people talking and one says "thats just like what happened on sunday". The audience whould have no idea what was happening unless it froze and a character said " last sunday joe got drunk and lost one hundred dollars gambling. " If we didnt have monoluoge whe wouldnt now this. Monolouge gives us a better understanding of characters and why they do things.

Kmans Stuff

This is a recap ofwhat my group has done, where we are now and what whe plan to do.

So far the global warming group has reasearched the issue. As many know , it will apparently bring the appocolypse. Floods , heat waves , penguin casulities, everything. We looked at all the causes and affects of global warming.
Causes
  • Use of gases
  • Wasting energy
  • More population
  • Ignorance

Effects

  • Flooding
  • Extincition of Polar animals
  • Droughts
  • Loss of nautral resources

From this whe had all the infromtaion we would need in our performance. We moved onto writng the script. After much discussion we ended up with a Charles Dickens Christmas Carol esque story. Whe decide that we would start out in the future with all the affects of global warming visible, and then whe would go into the past and see the cause. At the end of course whe would have the hallmark ending where the characters realise its human ignorance that will bring their destruction , blah , blah , blah.

So far whe have acomplished our script. Whe have written the first five scenes and have a conflict and a solution. Every thing a growing play needs. We have also rehearshed it several times but we need to get a serious one going

Kmans Monolouge Response

I think that my monlouge was a interesting performance. It was based on the affect that global warming has on people in Africa involving droughts. I wanted to stress the fact that they have nothing to do with global warming but they are the ones who are affected by it. I used many adds for charity as my basis. Things like eating pity were my chief ideas to really show how the people feel about global warming.

My perfomramnce was good. I think i had a strong delivery and didnt give anything away with my emotions or facial expression. I already talked about my personal expeirence in my evaluation. My monolouge was more about a community than an individual and i proably could have added some deeper reflection or show the affects better if i had gone deeper into evaluation.

Kmans Stuff

1. That would be frustarating because our plays are sopposed to be culturaly aware and we should be sensitive to this. If we are going to give this to another school who doesnt know all the cultral things we do there is no point. In our performances we discuss things like globalisation. We protest against it , but do it anyways. If we are all children of an international world we we see every custom and culture why should we only use one as our inspiration. There is so much to offer and so many things available for use to use and we are simply ignoring them. Even the people who are from the countries of globalisation and the western culture is their own , they should try to make it more international.

2. For me i think the best combination so far is scripted improvisation. No dialuoge is written or actions , but it states what happens in the scene and from there what it should convey to the audience. From here the actors or actresses can use their own skills and talents to their advantage instead of using what the scripts require.

This week in drama we started scripting our play. I was not here on Wednesday, so I only helped today. It is going good so far. I really like what the rest of my group has done for the first two scenes. It seems to be very realistic. The personality of each character varies according to what their entire role is in the play. The rapist has a "strange" aura and you can tell that something isn't right about him. I really like what we have so far and I think it will turn out really well! I can't wait to see what the other group has done!

nad

I think you might have found it frustrating to hear that korean and other students from different nationalities are naming their characters Western and European names such as Dorothy, John, and James, because American and British names have become stereotype names that are used commonly. It also limits the ability of improving the character, because the names affect the characters' nationalities and religions. The plays we are making are supposed to be international, and not limited on only one area of the world since we are looking at a global issue. There should be korean, Indian, English/American, and other names from different countries. Why should everybody be limited to western names when they have millions of other choices?

When it comes to the different ways of developing the play, i found scripting the easiest. This way we know what is going on, and it is much more organised. when you improvise at first, then write the script it is not as organised and you often forget ideas. In my point of view, the best way is to script, and then perform it using the scripts. As you perform you will realize the mistakes and additions to the play, or things you need to change, replace, and delete.

My monologue; nad

I think my final performance of my monologue was okay, but i think i was a bit too nervous becuase i mixed a few words around, and i smiled in the end, although i was not meant to. I also could've put a bit more detail to it rather than listing what happened. Over all, i think i did satisfactory.

Reflection

1. You might have had found this frustrating to hear because this an international standpoint we are dealing with. Not the average joe stereotypes. It's important for us to recgonize that not the english-speaking civilization is a very dominating one but there are much more who are dealing with the same things or much worse. We are representing children from all around the world. These are global issues, something we have to acknoledge.

2. I probably like improvisation best because you get to explore your skills in drama and toy with your knowledge. To be able to go on and on about one topic and act as casual and in character as possible is a talent. I like to express these feelings and act it out rather than writing it up. Video recording is something I also like to do in some cases because you can check over your work and see how you can perfect it. Though, everything you do is watched and too expectant. You act a certain way around a camera and what most people want to see is the true acting. Word processing I find kind of useless other than just writing up the script. Even then, I just like to memorize it in my head not by reading it and then memorizing.

Blue Eyed Blonde's posts

First blog
Today, all of us went into the Stundent Research Area and looked up about
global warming, women's rights, rascism, war, child labour, rape and about
poverty. Mrs. Tickle assigned many people to look up one thing at a time so
we would understand. Overall, i thought this was very useful and
interesting.

Cartman

1. Because you just got a mix of cultures to get a bunch of their own culture names when they did the exact same thing they were not supposed to do and got english common names.
2. I think the best way for our goup, is to script it first, and then practice it. I think this is easier because it didn't really work out improvising and when you perform after you scipt you can notice any mistakes you made and then change it.

none available

1] you would want people to use names of their contry not the usual ones.
2] i like to improve then do word but videos can be funny

so i don't like writing bite me

Catch up with your reflection!

If you have not yet updated your entry about the monologues, please do so. If you can't manage to post your own entry, then you can email me at tickle_jennifer@tisa.az. No excuses!

You have this week to ponder and reflect upon the following:

1. We had an interesting analysis lesson looking at cultural bias in an English play written for school students. one of the first things we all noticved was that the list of characters all had names that we would asociate with US/UK/NZ/Australia - like John, Jane, Timmy etc. We discussed the implications of naming characters in this way and how it made you, as multi-cultural international students feel. The very next lesson, I watched three students, from Korea, Pakistan and Austria repectively, sit down to plan the opening scene of their play. They decided to begin by naming characers, and immediately came up with the names Dorothy, John and James. Why might I have found this a bit frustrating to hear?

2. We have been exploring different ways of developing the play, using a combination of improvisation, video recording and word processing. What combination works best for you, and why?

Monologue/Child Rights Performance

I think I did well in my monologue. I gathered myself togther, got in character, and went on and on about my story. Sometimes it was hard to keep up with myself but i never laughed which I'm happy about. I feel that monologues really tell the story better and communicates to the watcher that what you went through really hit you.

We are now doing child rights performances. The subject we chose for our group is really interesting. Its date rape and self mutilation. I feel that many teenage girls go through a stage where they feel that they need to be older, and in our performance we show how a girl can go through that. It's always hard to find what is realistic and what isnt. If she would actually cut herself over fake love for example. In the end its what we think we would do and what would we do in her place. After all, we are just kids.

my monologue was decent, i think that i could have focused a bit more and maybe added some depth to my character. monologues are a very important piece of drama and i think that i did well.

I think that monologues help in a play with a lot of people because you get to know the characters more. When you watch a play, or even a movie, you don't know what the character is thinking by just looking at him/her. Monologues help you connect with the character. My monologue was about a girl who was scarred by war. She would see her mother with a gun up to her head everyday.
This week in drama we began thinking about the play that we will be writing. We decided to do two separate stories going on at once and they link in the end. The beginning of it is a flashback. One of the stories is about date rape. The other is about a girl who is being forced into a marriage that she doesn't want and the man that she really loves is killed by her family. They are both depressing things to make a play about, but it is real and important. I think that it will get to be really interesting the further we get.

In plays monologues can help the audience to get to know the character. The monologue can tell their background or say what they are thinking. It helps the play have more depth if the characters are more understood. My monologue was about poor families giving up their children to wealthy familes so they can live a better life, but the rich families take the kids and turn them into slaves.

Cartman

I think that monologues are useful within a play becasue they can express the characters thoughts and emotions. Plays usually don't do that much, but if you add a monologue, you get to see the character more. My monologue was about 9/11 and child soldiers. It was about a 15 year old kid who went to war for revenge.

Homework Feb 9th

I expect a comment from each of you over the course of this week - you have until Friday Feb 9th to post your answer. If you can't post for some reason, email it to me and I will put it on the blog.

You are currently working on monologues. Explain why you think monologues might be useful if used within a longer play featuring more characters. You might also like to talk about your own monologue and how your research is going for it.

Kmans Stuff

Today we were given our project outline for our monoluoge. I think that this will be interesting. I get to stand and talk for about three minutes so that should be fun. I read some of the monouloges and i think that they are disturbing. Death, violence , and many other things that make the world such a happy place. I am thinking of doing something with droughts for global warming. That could be interesting with thirst and other aspects like crops that I could include. That is my basic plan on what i want to do with my monolouge and hopefully this will work out well.

~ flor ~

In drama we have started focusing on global issuse. The M3-B class was split into two main groups (discrimination and Global Warming). I was intersested in discrimination so i was put into the discrimination group. So far we have been working on different performances based on our groups. During each one of our performances we have been learning a new form of drama such as monologing, freeze-frames and documeteries. These performances have been hard yet a learning expieriance. They have been difficult because we have only about one lesson to plan, create and perform each one. I have learned a lot about the different types of discrimination and how they have affected the world. I have also been learning a lot about different types of drama. My acting skills have also been imporoving which i am very happy about since i'm not exactly the worlds greatest actress. I am enjoying this unit a lot. I am not only learning about drama but also increasing my knowledge on the world.

This week my group re-worked our play on children in the military. Now, we have a better play with more of a focus. People bribe kids with peer pressure and black mail to get them to join the army. it is a terrible thing but unfortunelty it is happening all over the world. In our play we have a girl getting revenge on the guy who killed her parents and the man who is recruiting her gives her a gun and she goes and kills him. After she has killed, she has to be apart of the army. we have to try and stop this horrible thing from happening. it is distroying people and ripping families apart. No kids should be in the military forces.

BRYY

this past week i looked at child abuse. i found lots of statistics on child abuse, and more and more children are getting abused. Many parents dont know that they are are abusing there children though because the biggest problem is neglect and the parents dont pay attention to their kids. Most parents dont mean to neglect them, because they might be young parents or they might have been abused themselves. Child abuse is a terrible thing and we have to do everything we can to sop child abuse from happening. This week my group made a play on children drafted into the military. In our play we had two generals come and steal three littlw boys from their family. we had a good idea for the play because things like that, unfortunetly happen, but we did not have enough information on the topic. this week we are researching the topic more and then we are revising the production. I like this task a lot because its fun but it lets us learn about world issues.
I am doing the attack on 9/11 and im working with cartman. I have looked at his web pages and I have an extreme point, Get ready.....

If there was a 9/11 conspiracy, and what the college students with no girlfriends had come up with is true, and the president killed hundreds just for a good reason to go to war in Iraq, then 5 or 6 more college kids is no biggie. The government would have taken them, killed them and destroyed their followers as well as all of the articles that stated these conspiracies. THERE IS NO CONSPIRACY, IT WAS REALLY AN ATTACK BY SUICIDAL PEOPLE THAT (apparrently) REALLY HATED THE USA.

All hail NOT George Bush!!!!
(this does not mean i hate texas, i love it.)

We were talking about child abuse. We had to et into groups and make sculptures showing innocence and abuse. That was one of the hardest things that I have ever had to do in my fourteen years of living! It is so hard for me to keep a staright face especially when people are staring at me and talking about the position I'm in! I'm SO proud of myself for being able to keep it together (most of the time)! We then had to make a short performance (not a skit) showing child labor. The other group had to show fighting children. Sophia, Samir, Ashni, Megan, Nadira and I made a performance about children working in a Nike sweatshop sewing shirts. Megan, Nad and I were the workers. Nadira and I were sisters and she was dying of an illness. It showed how people that own places like that don't care about anyone but themselves and their families even if someone is in great need of help. We were able to perform it pretty well, but Nadira and I sort of lost it in the end and burts out laughing! OOPS!

I got a bunch of info on my topic of Global Isuues. It's basically George Bush or 9/11. I am also working on this with Dr. Zoidberg the lobster boy and here are a few websites with the information.
http://www.en.wikipedia.com/wiki/9/11
http://www.globalissues.org/Geopolitics/WarOnTerror/Investigation.asp
http://www.en.wikipedia.com/wiki/9/11_conspiracy
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=911_morons - article about 9/11 conspiracy (swearing)
http://www.gnn.tv/articles/article.php?id=1016 - Hip Hop response to 9/11

1. I don't think our group had any difficulties with the performance except for maybe getting Spencer to play his part.
2. Our first part of the play was the best so i guess i would keep that. (It was about child labour).
we were discussing about child abuse. this lesson we were divided into two groups. my group had to make a play about military. in our play three boys were taken from their house to go and join the army. there were two generals and the boy's mother. these three boys had to learn using guns and they were taken for the fight. but while going, the truck exploded and one of their brother was dead. and the two other while running to him got shot. and thats how it ended.

What kind of a world is this?!

In drama we talked about global issues and began researching ones that we were interested in. I began researching child labor and I found a lot! As a class we decided to focus on a few main global issues. These consisted of poverty, women's rights, 911, child labor, WMD and HIV/AIDS. I am most interested in child labor and women's rights. Both of them upset me because I am a girl and a kid. We deserve to be in school, not sewing nike shoes to be able to pay for one meal for our family. Everyone, like us, takes it for granted and as we're using our child labor made product, we don't even think about it! What kind of a world is this?! It makes me really mad when guys think that just because they are bigger and stronger (most of the time) that they rule the world. It's NOT true! Women are just as smart and without women, males wouldn't even exist! We don't deserve to be pushed around by other people. Sadly, in some places, women are. Since I obviously have an interest in both of these, I will be doing most of my research on them.
http://hrw.org/children/labor.htm
http://hrw.org/women/

I love carrots

Last lesson we were looking for information about Global Issues. I focused on Racism which i think is a global issue because many people in the world have fights about this. What is Racism, "Racism means attitudes, practices and other factors that disadvantage people
because of their race, color or ethnicity. Racism can be directed against any
race, color or ethnicity." There are less and less racist people in the world today but it is still a Global Issue. The class has been divided into two different groups and i am now in the group focusing on racism.

Kmans Stuff

In response to Mrs. Tickles question I think That Mr.Swifts ideas were interesting. His idea may have worked but may have had a negative affect on the populace. The rich may of thought that this was a good idea but the poor like their children.

Sh! er !n-15/1/07.

Last time I spent the whole lesson researching on different topics. The topics I reasearched were: racism, different rape articles and discrimination of religions around the world. Some websites I visited were:
http://www.allaboutpopularissues.org/
http://www.religioustolerance.org/

About Children

Last lesson I searched about Global Issues. Like Children and education for the children.

http://www.un.org/cyberschoolbus/briefing/labour/index.htm
http://www.un.org/cyberschoolbus/briefing/soldiers/index.htm
http://www.un.org/cyberschoolbus/briefing/children/index.htm

I got the information in these sources

Lmans Junk

today Kman ani i went around on the internet to look all around at Global Warming, Womens Rights, Weapons of Mass Destruction, Rascism and i found Global Warming the most ineresting so Kman and i decided to choose this topic to write and reaserch about.

Kmans Stuff

I response to the comment on my origanal post I think that all of the worlds problems could be solved by decreasing the poulation. Hunger , depletion of energy , the environment . All these problems could be solved. Less people for the same amount of food. Less people for the same energy. And less energy emissions and requirement for resources. Poverty would also stop if people didnt have kids that they couldnt support. I think that many of the worlds issues could be stopped if people thought a little more about these problems(and yes Mrs. Tickle I know the reasons against it but i still think that it could work.)

For this lesson I reashearched what i could about global warming and had some i deas for the drama plays
  • Polar Bears on the Ice Bergs complaining
  • People using aersol and big diesel cars while others are energy safe
  • A christmas carol style story but with global warming
  • Bush in the white house with a bunch of penguins(half joking)

Overall i think that we should include some humor with the seriousness.

A Modest Proposal

”I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled ...”

Jonathan Swift (1729)

Check out this link for an interesting proposal not dissimilar to Kman's theories on over-population and eating pigeons. What do you think was the reaction of the audience listening to Swift's speech? What is your response?

An interesting idea..

Racism group - one of you found the following during the course of your research:

This new initiative is aimed at allowing people to interact with someone who is different from them, someone whom they may otherwise avoid or make unfounded assumptions about. By creating easy-access to different people, all library members will have the opportunity to discover their similarities and ask questions they may never have wanted to pose to a stranger on the street. This includes people with different religious views, lifestyle choices, sexual orientations, etc.
Good idea, right? Maybe a bit strange or unconventional, but nonetheless, a grand idea.
